Decades of history, a near-perfect 2-in-1 concept - the 9th iteration of the Surface Pro at the top of the Surface family outperforms its predecessors and competitors in performance and power efficiency.
To tell the truth, this is not surprising, as the industry's technological advances have always been available, and it is a fact that a product line destined for success would use one or another of these developments and future-proof solutions. And it is also true that after all, any hardware manufacturer can combine and assemble them into a package, so why should the top-of-the-range model designed by Microsoft be so different? Well, engineers at Redmond have been working on a unique recipe for a while now, and that's what makes the new Pro 9 models so exciting.
The recipe should be familiar to those with some user experience of previous generations. The basic concept hasn't changed this time either, and most people will probably only be able to guess that they are dealing with the new flagship model after a long examination. The size of the display, the thickness and weight of the device, and the design of the stand are all very similar, which is a positive sign, as this shape has become unique and one of the Surface's trademarks. The big change is underneath the display, and the Pro 9 duo starts right away with a choice here. Those who like classic hardware features can opt for one of Intel's latest 12th generation processors, which features a hybrid architecture that strikes the perfect balance between performance and energy efficiency. Or, when it's needed, up to 10 processor cores provide high computing power, with low-power components taking the lead at low-usage modes. In everyday use, this works impressively, and now a movie marathon on the weekend can go up to over 13 hours, but we've found that running more compute-intensive programs shouldn't take less than 6 hours. Remember, we're still talking about a 13" Windows 11 tablet.
But the real magic comes with the other option, which you can first notice by the "5G" sign behind the product name. A version of the Pro 9 is available as soon as it's launched, to meet extreme mobility needs, an entire platform has been developed and refined by Microsoft's engineering team. The core unit, called SQ3, is built on the foundations of the smartphone world, and although we're talking about the same device, our relationship with it changes accordingly as we use it. You get the same Windows 11 experience, but without the distracting fan cooling, but with 5G mobile connectivity available, you can really keep your device connected online anywhere, anytime. What's more, the unique platform is built using state-of-the-art manufacturing technology, so 16-17 hours of battery life is easily achievable. Sometimes you may run into a problem with one or two third-party programs, but if you're working in the Microsoft’s ecosystem, everything is as handy and lightning-fast as on a traditional PC.
If your daily tasks include creative content production in addition to office tasks, we recommend the standard model, but if uptime and constant data connectivity are paramount, we'd go for the 5G model. A magnetically attached keyboard cover is available for both models, and they come with the Surface Pen 2, which is clearly the perfect tool for taking notes and drawing (even in live presentations).
